My PSU is 400W, max 450W with GTS 250 1 GB, and I want to upgrade my video card to HD6850 with 18W power lower than GTS 250. Could this be possible or do I need to replace my old PSU to a new and upgraded model? I am confused. I want to know in advance in order for me to avoid some problems in the future, if I decide to buy it. Please give me some advice. Thank you.

Hi,

If the new video card, the Radeon HD 6850, has a lower power rating than the older one, the GTS 250, and your power supply was able to handle the system while it had a GTS 250 without being overloaded, then it should be capable to handle the upgrade. Just make sure that your power supply has the power connectors required by the Radeon HD 6850 and your computer should be good to go. Also make sure that the new card will have the necessary interface to connect your monitor.

Thank you. Hope it helps with your current predicament.

Yes, you need to upgrade the power supply of your computer to install AMD Readon HD6850. AMD Readon HD6850 requires 500 Watt or greater power supply to run in a computer. So, you need to buy a new power supply of 500 Watt or more for this card. This card can increases the temperature of your CPU. For that reason you can use mid-tower casing for your CPU because it has the opportunity to use more fans in the CPU.
