I want to use my web camera for home security surveillance to help me protect my children when I am out of the house working. I also want to view the camera’s captured video on my mobile discreetly over the internet with passwords and all. Any free software out there?
Web Camera set as security surveillance
Hello Farah Gold.
I just started with this cool, free application that lets me use my webcam for security purposes. It's called iSpy (http://www.ispyconnect.com/). It's got great features for setting up web cameras for surveillance of your home, workplace, anywhere. You can upload captured videos to YouTube, access and control cameras and microphones via your iPhone, Android and Windows Phone 7 device. It can send you e-mail or SMS alerts when it detects any movement or sound. Anyways, there are more features than I can list here and I'm still getting used to it.
Another web cam security application that I know of is Dorgem (http://dorgem.sourceforge.net/). It's open source like iSpy but it has already been discontinued and does not have half the features of iSpy. Still, if you want something simple, then Dorgem might be what you need.

Farah,
Good question, there are a lot of options for software out there but I would definitely recommend iWatchLife – which you can download for free at www. iwatchlife.com/download.  It's really simple to install, and once you have an account and password, you will be able to view the footage from any computer or internet-enabled mobile device.  It also has smart motion detection which won't send you false alarms like traditional motion detection.
Good luck!
