Experts,

I need some professional help please. My exchange server, which is not a DC, is talking to a DC using DC protocols, specifically to only one particular DC. Can you help me understand why this is happening and how do I fix it? Thank you and I really appreciate your help.

Hallo Master25,

First you should have mentioned which type of the exchange server you are using for me to able to help troubleshoot your problem. Is it exchange server 2003, 2007 or server 2010?

But anyways, you have to know the exchange server will depend entirely on the active directory, and this is because about all of the configuration of the exchange server is stored in the active directory, and for that reason it will communicate continuously with the DNS servers, the DC's and the GC' s too.

So according to the type of exchange server you are using you will see the communication on different ports from the server to the domain name service, DC or GC and I have listed some for you. See below:

389/TCP/UDP (LDAP)

3268/TCP (LDAP GC)

88/TCP/UDP (Kerberos)

53/TCP/UDP (DNS)

135/TCP (RPC netlogon)

Hope this helps.
