There is a strange error message which I receive when I try to perform Windows Update.

I have not had any issues before on my Windows Vista machine. Recently, when I tried to update Windows I faced the following error message:

Windows could not search for new updates

An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer.

Error(s) found:

Code 80072EFD  Windows Update encountered an

                                 unknown error.

I checked the Windows Server Update Services and everything works fine. Is there anything that I can do, to make sure that my Windows are up to date?

  • Here are some steps to solve this problem:
  • Click the start button ;  then control panel ; system maintenance ; in  the Windows update, turn automatic update off or on ; then just click, never check updates. Now Reboot.
  • After rebooting, click on My computer ; then on your system drive C: ;  Open the Windows folder and rename it with software distribution,  to software distribution old ; then make a new folder named, Software Distribution.  Now close all the programs and Windows ; then Reboot.
  • Go back to the first step above & then turn on the automatic updates & reboot.
  • Once done, click on the Windows Automatic Updates folder and run the updates.

  • Turning on the automatic update will do the same.
  • By the way, if you have a previous update, that is not completed, repair your operating system.  So that, update may proceed. You can use your Microsoft Windows Vista installation disk to repair your operating system.
  • If after repairing, the operating system does not solve the problem, please check all connections in your computer. Is it connected to the Internet? If not, plug-in your Internet connection and then log-in into your Internet service provider, if log-in is required.
  • Microsoft Windows Update requires an Internet connection, so you must be sure that you have properly configured your Internet connection into your computer.

The update error occur because of many Issues. the most commonly issue is that the window is not registered with the Microsoft organization means the window that are using and try to update is pirated copy. the pirated copy gives many error during updating, and the other disadvantage of pirated copy is that it does not provide the security solution for the users.

To solve your problem what you have to do you should first check that your window is pirated or registered with Microsoft Organization. If your window is register then you can click on the link at the given picture and report to Microsoft for the error. thanks

The error code 80072EFD is usually caused by a large amount of update requests causing the Windows Update servers to slow down. This can be overcome by closing the Windows Update and waiting 10 to 20 minutes, and then trying again, or rescheduling the update for a different time.

If that does not remedy the situation, you may have something running on your computer that prevents the Windows Update Services from gaining access to the internet. You may need to add the Windows Update website to the appropriate program’s exceptions. Possible programs that can do that are firewalls, security and antivirus programs, proxy servers, etc.
