I usually use a DVD drive that contains official data. Today, when I inserted in the DVD drive of my laptop, it is showing some error followed by an exclamatory mark. When I clicked on the exclamatory mark icon, it showed this ‘windows could not start this hardware device because its configuration information is incomplete or damaged’ error message. It is happening for the first time. How can I fix this?

If you have a problem with your laptop’s optical drive or DVD drive, first, check if it has an error in the Device Manager. If you have Windows 7, click “Start” then right-click “Computer” and select “Properties.” On the next screen, click “Device Manager” on the left pane. In the “Device Manager” window, double-click “DVD/CD-ROM drives” to expand.

Expand "DVD/CD-ROM drives"
Expand “DVD/CD-ROM drives”

Now, check if your optical drive has an exclamation mark which indicates a problem. If it has, right-click your DVD drive and select “Uninstall.” After this, close all windows then restart the computer. Windows will reinstall the device driver for the DVD drive on boot. If this doesn’t work, try updating the drivers on your computer.

You can download the latest drivers from the manufacturer’s website. See the following list of computer manufacturers:
