I am a computer engineering student, and while dealing with networking concepts, I came across the Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol. Can someone let me know what is this protocol used for and how is it different from other protocols?

Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol (SSTP) is a form of Virtual Private Network. It provides a tunnel-like mechanism to transport PPP traffic through SSL or TLS channel. It uses TCP port 443.

PPP, also known as Point to Point Protocol. It is a data link layer protocol existing between two nodes that do not have the intervention of other networks or hosts between them. It is a simple protocol followed by two peers to transport their packets. The SSL / TLS channel provides security of the transport level with various encryption, traffic integrity, checking key negotiation mechanism.

Things to be noted is that performance will be good only when there is enough bandwidth between the two nodes, and it supports user authentication only, not a device or computer authentication.

If you are using Windows, then this protocol is considered to be a good one for VPN services.
