WDS or Windows Deployment Services is a server role that grants administrators the ability to deploy the Microsoft Windows operating system via remote connection. It is a server technology from Microsoft for network-based installation of Windows operating systems. This server role can be used for network-based installations to set up new computers so that administrators don’t have to directly install every operating system.

This is the successor to Remote Installation Services or RIS. It is designed to be used for remotely deploying Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10, Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2012, and Windows Server 2016. If an admin is planning to use WDS, Microsoft recommends having good knowledge about common networking components and deployment technologies including Active Directory Domain Services, DHCP, and DNS.

WDS is included as a server role in all versions of Windows Server 2008 both 32-bit and 64-bit and is also included as an optional installable component with Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2.
