Is it true that you need to unplug your PC and leave it off for several days before cleaning it?  I smoke so my system gets really dirty and needs a good cleaning. Is this what I should do first and how many days should it be left completely off?

No, this is not true. You don't need to unplug your PC before cleaning.  At any point of time you can clean it. Try to do dry cleaning, as much possible. Do not use any liquid cleaner for cleaning your system. Do not dampen your PC wile cleaning. Keep your system moisture free.

Use a soft brush for cleaning your PC. See the picture below:-

That’s one ridiculous reason that a person should do before cleaning the computer. That is absolutely not true. Unplugging the computer from the power is just a safety precaution to protect the devices connected to the system.

It is true that before cleaning the machine, there shouldn’t be any electrical power running on the system to avoid short circuiting the system but it doesn’t have to be for several days. You can start cleaning the machine right after you unplug it from the power.

If you will be removing attached expansion cards and other devices connected to the motherboard like the memory modules, make sure to remove them very carefully. Use a small vacuum or blower to blow away dirt and dust inside the CPU tower.
