Hi Michael

I know I am a bit late in saying this but unfortunately you deleted all your files on the partition when you reformatted it. You should have backed up all your necessary files beforehand. You cannot recover the lost files unless you have a backup. So I am sorry to say that your files are lost forever.

Another mistake you did is buying the full version of Windows 7 instead of the upgrade version. The full version is more expensive and is never needed if you have Window XP installed already. This would also have prevented the need for a reformat, thus saving all your files.

Hello Michael,

When you format the computer, .all the programs that you had installed on the computer are removed including the SPSS that you had installed, so that is not a strange happening that should leave you worried.

You will need to get the SPSS and install again on the computer, assuming that it will not have problems working on windows 7. If it brings compatibility issued when you install on windows 7, you will have to get a version of it that can run on windows and I believe you can  readily get a free copy online. So just search of it on the internet and download it.

Unfortunately, there’s no way to restore the licenses of your software because you already installed a new operating system. If all your software are licensed, you should be able to get back all the licenses from the software’s website or from the email that was sent to you when you bought the license. Every software license has to be backed up because it is the owner’s responsibility.

Recovering your license code from the developer’s website or from the store where you bought it is like a 50/50 chance. If you bought your software from the developer’s website, there is a slight chance that you can recover your license if you created an account there. But if you don’t have an account, I don’t think they can provide you your license back.

It is not the developer’s responsibility or the store’s responsibility to keep every customer’s registration codes, it is your responsibility. If you badly needed those software, unfortunately, there’s no other way but to buy them again. With regards to upgrading Windows XP to Windows 7, there is no direct path. Microsoft Windows 7 does not offer an upgrade option from Windows XP.

The only way to shift to Windows 7 from Windows XP is a clean install: format the system drive and install Windows 7 from scratch.
