A Home Router or a Router is a device that sends data on computers and connect various networks as one. It can connect 2 or more networks. For home networks, you can use a wired or a wireless IP router such as cable modem broadband router or a DSL.

Hi Ms. Merlyn,

The hardware router usage is by contrasting the IP or Internet Protocol addresses with the written policy and through traffic packages to destination Internet Protocol Addresses. All of the internet connections initiated among two points are passing through multiple routers on their way to reach final point, and all routers are filtering the packages according to established rules and then pointing packet in the right direction. If a package does not meet criteria it can be deleted, therefore never reaching its destination. A router is a device wherein two or more things can be joined, which connects a single network together. There is an inbuilt modem that connects computers either with one of its cables or without any wires. A router is a hardware device and one of the most common piece of networking equipment. It basically transmits and deliver information between two networks. There are two types of routers. The broadband router and the wireless router.

Picture above (right) is the wireless router. It creates a wireless signal in the place where it is installed. Any computer within range of the wireless router can connect and transfer information to the router and can use the internet for free. But you can secure your wireless router with a password so it is not used by any computer with no permission.

Broadband router is another type of router. They serve the purpose of connecting two different computers to be able to connect to the internet. Broadband routers has a lot of purposes and uses such as creating phone connection etc.

Hello Nevil,

You are asking of what is the purpose of a router. Well, router is a small device that joins several networks together or it links networks together. It has the ability to filter traffics, either incoming or outgoing which is based on the IP address of the sender and receiver. It needs to be configured before it can connect to a certain network.

The bottomline here is that a router lets us connect from the internet and it is very useful to us like surfing on the net, making research, social networking and etc.

I hope I have answered your question.

Thank you.
