Couple of hours ago I was doing a routing clean install of windows XP, and I don't know what got over me but I accidentally formatted a partition that had many audio and video files that I backed up from my music collection.

There are many reasons behind this. Partitions may be deleted at anytime by some viruses.

Unless the partition where your files hasn't been overwritten by newer files or if it hasn't been "full formatted", you may be able to retrieve the files on your formatted partition.
There is a difference with "Quick Format" and "Full Format", as "Full Format" completely cleans your hard disk, so file recovery wouldn't be possible.
All you will need to do is look for a partition or file recovery application, like "DiskInternals Uneraser" or "Partition Recovery" or the like, install it and follow the recovery procedures provided with the software.
