I have made a word(.doc) file in MS Word and it is not encrypted or corrupted. Other office suites like WPS and Corel open the file but Open Office doesn't. 'This is not a WinWord97 file' is the error generated by Open Office. What is the reason behind this error? How can I fix it?

Normally, Microsoft Office Word documents can be opened and edited on Apache OpenOffice. To open the document in Apache OpenOffice, you need to use Apache OpenOffice Writer. It is the equivalent of Microsoft Office Word. If your Microsoft Office Word application still saves the file in DOC format or “.doc” then you are still using an old version like Microsoft Office Word 2003.

But if you are using Microsoft Office 2007, by default, Microsoft Office Word saves the file in DOCX format or “.docx”. And if you are using this version or maybe higher and you just saved the document in DOC format instead of DOCX, try updating Apache OpenOffice to the latest version.

Visit Apache OpenOffice Download to get the latest version, Apache OpenOffice 4.1.1. Once installed, try opening the document using the latest Apache OpenOffice Writer and see if it works. If it doesn’t, try uploading the file to your Google Drive if you have a Google account. Visit My Google Drive then login using your Gmail account when you are prompted.

To upload the file, click New then select File Upload. Navigate to the location of your document then select the file and then click Open to upload. Once the file is uploaded, right-click the file in your web browser, point to “Open with”, and then select Google Docs. If there is no problem with your file, Google Docs should be able to open it.
