Hello,

I am just wondering how to troubleshoot a power button for a desktop computer. I have a new dell computer and when I turn it on it doesn’t respond. The button is sometimes very hard to be pressed. I have to try several times before it starts up. Can anyone suggest a way to get rid of this problem?

You can try the following:

1. Disconnect all the power cables.

2. Now disconnect all the devices connected through USB ports.

3. Press and hold the power button for about thirty seconds and then release power button.

4. Wait for about 2 minutes.

5. Reconnect power cables and try to turn on the system.

And your issue should be fixed.

Hello Patricia C lahr,

As you mentioned in your post, it might be mechanical problem rather than external. Your power button may have some external issues like, it maybe cannot reach the internal button to power up. Your button may be stuck. It also can be power supply or motherboard related problem. Most probably the problem is flat CMOS battery. A battery with 3V lithium cell on the motherboard. Now, if you do own a volt meter check the voltage of cell. So if it is not working better to see a mechanics. It may be a different problem.
