Hello, I am using Microsoft Office 2007 on Windows 7 Operating System and recently I created a Purchase Order Form in Microsoft Word document. After some days I tried to open this doc but displayed this error message. Any idea would be grateful. Thanks.

This happens when a Microsoft Word document version is saved on another version. Not all Microsoft Word versions are the same and in fact it is very common that a document originally made from Microsoft Word 2007 is saved under version 2010. This causes the error because at version 2010, you can no longer open the file using Microsoft Word version 2007. This is what happened to your Purchase Order format.

There are two things you can do.

  1. The first is to start all over again with a new template and make sure you save it correctly this time.
  2. A longer solution is as follows:
  • Add a new template based on the default template.
  • Modify the new template and the defective template.
  • From the defective template, cut the header, body and footer and paste them on the new template.
  • Save the new template and make sure to select "save as" and maintain compatibility to Microsoft Word 2007.
