I am using Microsoft Office 2003 and I saved my file in .doc format. Now I see some files in the .docs format. So what's that format?

Older versions of Microsoft Office, like Microsoft Office 2000, 2002 and 2003 export files as DOC. Microsoft Office 2007 and 2010 export files as DOCX but you can still export .DOC files if needed. DOCX files are an archive of XML files and it is compatible with a huge number of programs. DOCX files cannot be opened using Microsoft Office 2000, 2002, and 2003.

To open those files using old versions of Microsoft Office, you need to download compatibility package from the Microsoft website. That package will allow users to open DOCX files but they cannot create them using Microsoft Office 2000, 2002 and 2003.

You can convert your .doc files to .docx files as well as you can also convert your .docx files to your .doc files through online converter or you can even download a converter for this purpose. These files contain two different versions of Microsoft Office and these file types are different as well .doc is a older version as well as .docx is a newer version of Microsoft Office.

You can install one as per your requirements and then can also convert these files. Also the new version supports the old version files but the old version doesn't support the new version files.

I hope through this discussion you are now able to understand the full concept for .doc and .docx files. Good bye.
