Error code 0146 in Dell computer’s self-test, indicates a failed or failing hard drive. If your computer suddenly crashed or displayed a blue screen error (BSOD) or suddenly booted to the BIOS, it means your hard disk is about to fail and is no longer functioning correctly. Dell advises that you replace your hard drive in case you encounter this error.

But still, try booting your computer even on Safe Mode. Start or restart your computer then press F8 before the Windows logo appears. In “Advanced Boot Options” screen, select “Safe Mode” then hit Enter. If you are prompted with different user accounts in the login screen, select the “Administrator” account to login. Once logged in, click “Start,” “All Programs,” “Accessories,” and then “Command Prompt.”

In the command prompt window, type the following command then hit Enter:

chkdsk /r

This will allow the chkdsk utility to locate bad sectors and recover any readable information which can help you boot your computer again normally. After this, restart your computer and boot normally and see if it works. If it doesn’t, the hard drive needs to be replaced. Also, if you are using a regular desktop computer, you might also want to check the cables connected to your hard disk.

Disconnect and reconnect both the ribbon cable and the power supply cable from the hard drive.
