explorer.exe file implies Windows program manager or resource manager, which is taking charge of graphic shells in the Start menu, taskbar, desktop as well as files. Alternatively, disabling the process will not display the icons. It has nothing to do with the Internet Explorer. Read about its parameters to get some knowledge of explorer.exe. It is even suggestable to complete this article with an answer to FAQs as well as solutions to several commonly seen issues.

Windows Explorer or now known as File Manager is a file manager application that is part of the Microsoft Windows operating system beginning in Windows 95 onwards. It provides you a graphical user interface or GUI so users can access the file system.

Though “Windows Explorer” is a common term used to describe the file management part of the operating system, the explorer process also includes the operating system’s file type associations and search functionality. The explorer process is the one responsible for displaying the Start menu, the desktop icons, the Control Panel, and the Taskbar. These features together are known as “Windows shell.”

Here’s where the explorer.exe comes in. When a user logs in to Windows, the userinit process will create the explorer process. The userinit process will then perform some initialization of the user environment like applying group policies and executing login script. It will then look at the Shell value in the registry and then creates a process, by default is “explorer.exe,” to execute system-defined shell.

After this, the userinit process exits leaving the explorer.exe running behind. If you receive an error related to explorer.exe, just try restarting the computer. If the error keeps on appearing on a particular program, try reinstalling that program and hope the error gets fixed. If this doesn’t work, check the program’s system requirements to learn if you missed installing a required component.
