I have an external hard disk called "Passport ". But every time I try to connect it in my laptop, I can't access it although it is being detected. I mean, the icon for a new device is displayed, but when I opened a new window, I can't 'see it anymore.  Also, the software can't be installed in my laptop every time I connect it.

How do i deal with this?

Is your external hard drive a USB port?

First, make sure you plug it on a high speed USB connector or else, it will not work properly.  It will show a message saying “USB device not recognized”. If doing that doesn’t solve the problem, you can try to plug the external drive from another computer or laptop. If it’s working on another computer or laptop, chances are, the problem might be found on your laptop. You can then buy a USB connector with a high speed connection. I guess that can solve your problem.

Second thing is, check if the files are hidden. Open the drive in Explorer, then go to Tools>Folder Options>View and check "Show Hidden Files and Folders".

The thing that you must do is to right click  "My Computer", and click open – then, right click the hard disk and select the security tab – click advance – check the box to replace ownership – click apply.

You can also try formatting the hard disk because it may be corrupted.

After hearing your question, I wanted to try and help you solve your problem. I understand that the problem you are facing is with your external hard drive which displays but doesn’t open. I would say that the hard drive's software installed in your computer is functional because if it isn’t fine then, the computer couldn’t have read your disk. Now, going back to the problem, it might have developed inside the drive. The most possible reason for this is that, you might have dropped your disk unexpectedly and due to this, the drive has been damaged.

Now, I would also suggest you to contact a computer repair representative who knows how to solve bad sectors inside a disk. Contact him immediately about this problem that you have in your disk. He would be the best person who could help you out with the situation you are in. I seriously hope, I have somewhat helped you out with this problem.

Thanks a lot.
