  • The question is, which operating system you want to boot from the pendrive. If you want to boot any Linux distribution as Ubuntu or Fedora or Slax, they contain tools to create a bootable USB pendrive. You can use their built in option step by step to create the bootable USB drive. If you want to boot windows XP or 7, you need to create a preinstalled environment using Bart PE tool. And then make it bootable from pendrive. Details information can be found here,
  • Also, if you want to boot windows 7 installer from USB, try following instructions.
  • Also, you can multi boot pendrives, meaning can boot more than one OS from one single pendrive. To do this you need to use a tool named SARDU. It can be found here, http://www.sarducd.it/
  • After creating the bootable Pendrive, go to bios and set USB Hdd as first boot device, connect the pendrive and restart your laptop. It should boot from the pendrive.

If you want to install windows 7 using a USB pen drive, do the following steps,

  1. Connect a USB pen drive or a flash drive to a computer running windows 7,and check that the storage device has no data, if there are any data please transfer it in another place, because this procedure removes all data.
  2. Open an elevated command prompt and write diskpart.
  3. At the diskpart > prompt, type list disk. Identify which disk connected to the computer represents the USB storage device.
  4. At the diskpart > prompt, type select disk X where X is the number of the disk that you have identified as the USB device.
  5. At the diskpart > prompt, type clean, When the disk is clean, type create partition primary.
  6. At the diskpart > prompt, type format fs = fat32 quick. When the format is completed type active and then exit.
  7. After you have completed these steps, copy all the files located on the windows 7 installation dvd to the USB storage device.
  8. Configure the BIOS computer on which you want to install windows 7 to boot from the USB storage device. Attach the USB storage device and then restart the computer to start installation.

I think you can now install windows 7.

Good luck.
