Hi experts,

Today, I was working over a network and attempted to save a document in Microsoft Word an error message appeared saying “There has been a network or file permission error.

The network connection may be lost. (FileName.doc)”.

What does it mean? Have any idea? A possible solution would be appreciated.

Thanks for assistance.

This error could cause by some reason:

  1. Fail to connect to your network. You can check this by open another file from the same location. If you can’t open another file it mean you had lost connection to your network and you need to check your network.
  2. If you can open another file it mean you don’t have permission to save file on that location on your network and you need to contact your network administrator to have permission,

It seems you are working on a file that is located or stored on a network drive. This can happen if the network connection got disconnected or another user is using the file. First, check your connection to the network drive. Make sure you can access that drive properly on your workstation.

If you’re on a local area network, make sure the computer of the network drive or the workstation where the file is located is running. If the computer is not running, try saving the file on your local hard drive by doing a “Save As”. In Microsoft Office Word, click “File” then “Save As”.

Now, if nothing is wrong with your connection and the computer where the file is located is running, another reason why you receive the error is if the file is opened by another user. If file sharing is not enabled on the file, only one user is allowed to open it. If another user opens the same file then one of you will receive the error.

To avoid seeing the error in the future, enable file sharing on the file so more than one user can open and edit the file.
