0x8024400e error is a Windows Server Update Service (WSUS) error when the computer tries to scan for updates on the WSUS server. 0x8024400e error means “SUS_EPT_SOAP_SERVER: The message was OK, but the server couldn’t process at the moment. This message may succeed at a later time.” The problem is a recent revision to the Office 2003 Service Pack 1 update on the WSUS server. When a computer with products related to Office 2003 communicates to one of the WSUS servers, the web service cannot process the approvals resulting in detection failure.

The steps to resets the approvals to a consistent state on the WSUS server are:

Step 1: Find the “Office 2003 Service Pack 1” update in the update list.
Step 2: Decline the request for the update.
Step 3: Right-click on the update and select the Approve option on the menu.
Step 4: In the ‘Approve Updates’ dialog that opens, just click on ‘Ok.’ Dismiss the Approval Progress dialog that appears.
