All that I should make you understand is that BIOS normally do not have any program to format the hard disk. In order to do that, you will require a boot disk. You can use any boot disk that contains the program of formatting the HDD. The easiest method is to insert the boot disk of the Operating system. Almost all OS disks are bootable and have the necessary settings for the format program. If you are installing Windows XP, then the as the CD boots, you get to a screen where you can create as well as delete partitions of the HDD. If you are with linux, try out the partition manager program easily available at boot time or installation time. This issue of formatting is not of a very problematic issue. Please let us know if you are still with problem.

It all depends on the Bios, but most probably the answer is no. Bios only formats hardware. Generally Bios doesn't contain the file required to format and re partition to your hard drive. It is for the allocation of the size and heads, cylinders, etc., Since it is not capable of formatting hard disks, perhaps you could use a boot disk to do the work. Alternatively, just go in to your bios and set it to boot from the cd or dvd drive you have the disk in and just go from there, then you will get a step by step telling u what to do.

Hey Zoegordon!

Well the simple answer of your simple question is "NO". You cannot format your hard drive via BIOS. Basically the BIOS is just Sets the hardware of our system. There are many software in the market that can be used for the partition or to format the Hard drive of your system. You can use partition magic or windows.

Also you can format via bootable CD/DVD. Just insert the CD/DVD in your CD/DVD ROM and press any key to boot from the CD/DVD.

Now you can easily format and make partitions for your hard drive.

Thanks
