I want to upgrade my current PC so that it can be used as a server. It will basically handle a printer, scanner, photocopy machine and 5-6 other computers. The motherboard is alienware, Core I5 2300 CPU clockspeed

Yes of course you can upgrade your PC to make it a server. There will be two kinds of upgrades. One will be the hardware upgrades and the other ones will be the software upgrades. You need to do both the upgrades to make you PC a server. For hardware upgrades, you will need to have a larger RAM and a larger hard disk so that you can maintain the on server disk allocation for different users on the network. For the software upgrades, you will need to upgrade your operating system. Windows 2000 Server was a very good operating system for servers. Windows 2003 server as well.
