Error message “NTLDR is missing”

Following might be the full message while computer is booting….

  • NTLDR is missing.
  • Press any key to restart.
  • Boot: Couldn’t find NTLDR
  • Please enter another disk.
  • NTLDR is missing
  • Press Ctrl + Alt + Del

Well it often happened due to any one of the following causes.

  1. Computer is trying to boot from some non-bootable source.
  2. Hard disk is not properly setup in BIOS.
  3. Corrupt boot sector or master boot record.
  4. Windows 2000 or XP version is seriously corrupted.
  5. Failing to enable USB keyboard support in BIOS

The NTLDR file is so important for booting for all versions of windows like XP, Vista and Windows 7 etc. It is present in the main hard disk of the PC. Sometimes when this file becomes corrupted then user has to reinstall windows in order to repair this file.

  • Simply follow below steps to resolve the problem.
  • Insert Windows XP installation CD.
  • When repair option appears on screen, press X
  • To reinstall windows option to correct this error press the option that matches. (Normally 1)
  • Type the following commands
  • Copy D-Drive:i386NTLDR C:
  • COPY D-Drive:i386NTLDR.COM C:
  • Take out your CD
  • Exit and press Enter to reboot your system.

The error mostly occurs when system is trying to boot from some non-bootable device like floppy etc. So make sure that you are not attached with any floppy and if it is then it has proper settings to boot from. If floppy has all settings but it is corrupt even then the problem may occur.
