Word Files Became read-only in Windows 7

Hi everyone,

I use a Dual boot in my laptop, that is Windows XP and Windows 7.  I am facing a problem with MS Word 2007 on Windows 7, where I am not able to edit any .doc files; they became read only files. But I don’t find the problem with XP, where the same files are working properly. I have 100’s of documents like this, which are Read only in Windows 7.

Can anyone tell me a possible fix for this problem?

Hello Michael, I have already heard many Windows 7 users facing the same problem with Windows 7 Operating System.

This problem persists both in windows XP and windows Vista. This problem was tried to be solved in many ways, even entering into command prompt to make this file editable but was completely unsuccessful.

The other thing you can try about this problem is Entering into the Trust Center and unchecking all boxes, in File block settings.  This may sometimes solve this problem but most of the time it does not, because Word 2003 and 97, Binary Documents and Template don’t have a box to uncheck.  This may not be the problem, but most of the time this is not solved via trust center and this Trust Center is available only in MS Office 2010 versions.

One of the possible fix that I may advice you to try, would be disabling the User account Control in the User accounts. To disable that follow the steps given below.

  • Go to Start and Click on Control Panel.
  • Now Select User accounts .In that you may see the User account control. Now true to disable it.

Most of the time, I have found this step to work out.

Ping me back once when the problem is not solved by this steps.
