I am having Windows 2000 Pro SP4 and IE6 working great as always in an old PC of mine which I was supposed to give to one of my relatives. But suddenly, the IE6 stopped functioning. I could luckily find the problem which is, it joins a third forward slash to the URL like this:- www:///.
To make it work properly, I have downloaded the IE6 but it didn’t work. It only works if I manually type the URL correctly. In order to fix the problem, can anyone please help me by telling how can I edit the registry? The OS has a Firefox 7 working very well.

This is a clear indication that you have a trojan horse virus in your machine.
Â
-
First you should try install ESET NOD32 in your machine and scan thoroughly your computer.
-
Once done now it is time to remove some registry entries which the virus has corrupted and that is giving you this extra slash error.
-
Open the Task manager and under the Process tab select winpack and delete this process.
-
After that go to start menu and in Run type regedit.
-
Look for the registry in Hkey current user/software/microsoft/windows/currentversion and then in the run.
-
It will have a registry entry similar to the one you deleted from the task bar.
-
Winpack REG_SZ C:WindowsSystem32winpack.exe.
-
Right click on it and click delete.
-
Save it and restart your computer.
