Why Floppy drive light always on

Whenever I power on my computer my floppy drive’s light is on even if there is no floppy disk inside it. I haven’t notice it since lately so I am not sure what’s causing this problem. I already checked the cable that connects the floppy drive to the motherboard. I already clean it using a floppy drive disk cleaning kit but the light still stays on.

I really have no idea what’s causing this. Does anybody know how to fix this?

There two main cause of this issue. It could be that the floppy drive cable wire is loosen or is not connected properly or the Floppy drive is failing.

Did you tried unplugging the data cable and putting it back again? The problem is most likely the data cable is not properly attached to the floppy drive. Make sure that the cable pin of the floppy drive is attached to its back and to the input/output motherboard. The first Pin is most commonly near at the power connector of the floppy drive and then the red stripe of the data cable should be pointing at the power connector.

Try to replace the data cable. The data cable maybe might be malfunctioning. Try borrowing data cable to one of your friends.

If you find that the data cable is properly connected and if you try using a different data cable for your floppy drive, then it most likely that your floppy drive is not functioning properly and the only thing that you can do is to replace it with a new on. Now a day, when you buy a new computer, you won’t be able to find any floppy drive on it, because most people use flash drives instead of floppy disk for storing their data. I suggest that if you’ll going to buy a new floppy drive then just but a USB stick, unless you really need the floppy drive for some purposes.

When floppy LED indicator is turned on always then the floppy data cable was plug incorrectly opposing to the pins in the motherboard or you have a bad floppy data cable. Turned off PC and unplug power cord. Locate your floppy drive when you the rear end of your floppy drive, unplug the data cable just flip it to opposite direction and replug the floppy data cable. Replug power cord and turn on again your PC.

If your computer is still using a floppy disk drive and the LED indicator is always on even if there is no disk inside, you need to check the cables inside your CPU. Shut down your computer then open the CPU case. Locate your floppy drive then disconnect all the cables. After this, plug the power supply back to the floppy drive then turn on the CPU.

On booting, check the floppy drive’s LED indicator if it is turned on. In this setup, the LED indicator should not stay on. It should turn back off after the initialization. If the LED indicator stayed on, the problem is with the floppy drive. You need to replace it.

If the LED indicator turned off automatically, shut down your computer again then connect the ribbon cable or data cable back to the floppy drive. Turn on the CPU again then check the LED indicator. It should turn off automatically after initialization. If the LED indicator stayed on, try using a different floppy drive ribbon cable or buy a new one.

If this doesn’t work even after replacing the floppy drive ribbon cable, the problem can be with the floppy drive port on the motherboard or with the floppy drive itself. In this case, try using a different floppy drive. But if the problem continues even after changing the floppy drive, your motherboard’s floppy drive support is not working.

In this case, disable your floppy drive in the BIOS and just use an external floppy drive that you can plug on the USB port. This is more convenient than using an internal floppy disk drive.
