I am planning to make a partition in my computer's hard drive.

I searched the internet for the procedure, and I was confused by the word RAID.

What does RAID 0-4 means and how do I configure them?

RAID or Redundant Array of Independent Disks is not in any way a backup solution although it can offer some degree of backup when it comes to hardware failures.

It does not however do anything if the system is virus infected, or if a bad driver has been installed. Instead, what RAID does is that it offers performance increase when it comes to disk reads or writes, and a protection if your hard disk fails.

There are several types of RAID that you can configure your system with:

  • RAID-0 which increases performance however, a failure in one drive will make you lose all the data on the array.
  • RAID-1 offers recovery in case of a hard disk failure, but there is no performance increase.
  • RAID-5 has the advantage of speed increase of your system’s performance plus the ability to recover if one of your drives fail, but you’ll lose some of your disk space.

Thank you for the information you have given to me.

You also gave me a website where there's a guide for installing and configuring Raid.

I appreciate it.
