LAN and MAN are the two basic types of computer networks where several computers are linked together to share resources, exchange files, or allow electronic communications.

LAN- Local Area Network that is confined to a relatively small area. It is generally limited to a geographic area such as a writing lab, school, or building. Rarely are LAN computers more than a mile apart. In a typical LAN configuration, one computer is designated as the file server. It stores all of the software that controls the network, as well as the software that can be shared by the computers attached to the network. Computers connected to the file server are called workstations.

WAN- Wide Area Network connect larger geographic areas, such as Florida, the United States, or the world. Dedicated transoceanic cabling or satellite uplinks may be used to connect this type of network.  Using a WAN, schools in Florida can communicate with places like Tokyo in a matter of minutes, without paying enormous phone bills. A WAN is complicated. It uses multiplexers to connect local and metropolitan networks to global communications networks like the Internet.

Hello Abbram,

Well, LAN is nothing but Local Area Network which means that with the help of it, you can build networks and connect to them, which is limited to a group, home or office and it is owned by a single person or an organization.  Whereas WAN is a broader concept.

It is called Wide Area Network and it basically covers a long area like a communication system which covers a metro city, National Boundaries etc. Also as it covers a broad area they can also be easily connected through Satellite and Leased lines etc. WAN is basically used by  management or huge organizations.

Thanks!!

Local Area Network uses Internet using wired connection. Mostly used by home networking and / or in a closed area. An area not relatively far away that can't be reached using Cat5 cord.

LAN is used by companies, schools, personal use (home) and anyone that is generally close to where the source is located.

Wide Area Network is generally used for wide networking. Wide enough that Ca5 cord can't reach. WAN mostly use wireless networking and is too far from where the source is. It uses either satellite or an antenna that broadcasts wireless signal.  These signals are strong enough to broadcast wireless connections.

The main purpose of WAN is mostly used for communication purposes. It generally covers a broad area and can exchange data through digital and or microwave signals.

Hello Abbram,

LAN stands for Local Area Network, and it is a type of network that is implemented within an organization or company that does not cover a lot of area. A network is simply the connection of computers, and other computing equipment like printers, scanners for the purpose of sharing information and storage.

A wide area network on the other hand is a network that covers a very wide range, It ranges from the network that will be implemented within a country to the network structure of the whole world. The Internet for example operates on the wide area network since you can access it at whichever place on the planet.

The term LAN (Local Area Network ) refers to a computer that interconnects in a limited area or coverage in a network like in homes and offices.  It usually refers to a computer directly connected to a modem or router that indicates communication to Internet or within a local group of computers that transmit data. It is useful for sharing resources like files, printers,  gaming applications and other  type of applications that indicate communication to the Internet.

It is composed of an Ethernet card or USB slot in a computer that will be used to connect using either a USB or Ethernet cable to transmit data from the one device to another.Unlike WAN connection, it covers a wide coverage of network.  It usually refers to wireless connections and it communicates using signal waves.
