USB external Hard Drive not being detected by windows

When I came home after work today and used my computer, my Seagate 100 GB Portable External Hard Drive suddenly got an error that says "Operating System Not Found". I am in a big trouble here because I have a lot of important files on it.

I tried a few troubleshooting steps like rebooting the PC, unplugged plus re-plugged the external HDD and even hooking it up to another computer. Windows 7 is my operating system and nothing has changed. Once the external HDD is unplugged, I can boot it to the operating system.

Anyone who has a good suggestion please help me.

Thanks.

From my understanding, you already tried to plug your ext. HDD to other machines but still not detected. So, I don’t think there’s no issue with your machine (OS). I have some lists that I think you need to try out:

  1. You need to check at your own ext. HDD, after you plug it to laptop or PC either the light in your ext. HDD is blinking or not. If not, then maybe it's a hardware issue.

  2. Let say, when you plug it, the light was blinking and there’s sound spinning from your ext. HDD, try to get another USB cable and plug it to your laptop or PC. The other end of USB cable plug to your ext. HDD. Maybe, this is due to lack of power by the ext. HDD.

  3. Check CMOS. This is also one of the possibilities you need to try due to power issue.

  4. Maybe you can use the sequence in the power up for USB device and connect it to the computer and the power management setting in Device Manager. Normally, it will apply to devices which are self-powered even though the power management setting might apply to port-powered devices. For this method, this is what you need to do. Just plug the ext. HDD to USB port without light up the ext. power. After that, on it, wait for a few seconds and disconnect them from the computer and power. Wait for a while again and on the power up, after a few seconds, plug to your machine. It’s a kind of reset.

  5. Checking the bios is also possible. Maybe the first boot at your laptop is ext. HDD not the primary. Just go to bios and change first boot up to the primary HDD.

  6. Go to "Control panel" – "Administrative tools" – "Computer management" – "Disk management" (if you see, there’s a drive that can not be accessed, right click  the header and click online / change drive letter).

  7. Update firmware. Maybe before this, your windows just updated so the ext.HDD need to be updated as well.

  8. If it’s possible try to get another case (maybe borrow from  friends) and put your HDD on that case. This is only needed to make sure that there’s no issue with your HDD, if it works then maybe, any possibilities are at your case.

  9. There’s another possibility also where by the HDD is not seated properly while you put it at the case. You should try the simple troubleshoot also, before you jump into expert solution. Try to make sure you assemble everything in a perfect way.

  10. I have some advices here also, to avoid this kind of issue it’s better for you not plug your ext. HDD before your laptop is fully log in. What I’m trying to say is,  wait until your laptop is fully log in to your OS. After all is perfectly loaded, then plug your ext. HDD, on the power and wait until all is detected. It is much better rather than you plug  your ext. HDD all the time and try to load up together while your laptop is booting up.

Best Regards,

Brown
