I purchased vmware thinapp 4.0.1 at that time they launched it, but I never used it up to now. Can I update it to the latest one available without purchasing the latest one? How would I do it?

It is know that you purchased version 4.0.1 and it is not possible to get a newer version in previous payment you made.
You need to know more about the policies of the company.
Go through this link (or past this link in your browser https://www.vmware.com/support/pubs/thinapp_pubs.htmland read the) company's policy carefully.
You are unable to get a new version without paying.
