Speaker malfunction in an Acer Iconia A1

My Acer Iconia A1 tablet has gone mute. All of the sudden, with no warnings or weird scratching sounds, the volume was no more. I tried everything I could think of in the settings, but nothing helped. The headphones still work, and when I connected it to my car radio it plays through the AUX cable with no issue. What I would like to know is 1) if there is a way to know if this is a software or hardware problem and 2) if the speakers can be replaced in case it’s their fault.

Hey Rex, it’s unnatural for a speaker to just die all of a sudden without any hardware or driver issues. Speakers in our computers, laptops are just simple electromagnetic devices and all they do is transmit signals from the hardware and out the speaker output. Try also to simply tweak your device manager. From Start, go to control panel, then double click the System, then next select Hardware tab, now click the device manager. Within the device manager click on the plus [+] sign before the Sound or game controllers.  Also do check on the possibility that there might be a yellow question mark for this will indicate one of the required device driver is corrupted or missing.

With that problem, the first thing you can try is to factory reset your device. You can do it from Recovery Mode. With your tablet completely off, press and hold the Volume Up, Home, and Power buttons simultaneously until the logo appears. When the logo appears, release the Power button but continue holding the other keys. When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release all buttons.

To navigate between the options, press the Volume Up/Down buttons. To select or Enter, press the Power button. Now, press Volume Down and go to “wipe data/factory reset” then press the Power button to select. Next, press Volume Down and go to “Yes — delete all user data” then press the Power button to select. Android will begin clearing your tablet’s data so just wait.

When it is finished, go to “reboot system now” and press Power.
