When I opened Twitter yesterday, I was greeted by tweets from fellow Twitter users that Facebook is down or the messenger is down. I live in the Philippines and my Facebook account is logged in the entire day on my computer but nothing bad happened. So, what’s with the messages saying Facebook is down when it is completely fine on my computer?
This problem happened on December 10, 2020 when users started experiencing problems while sending messages using the Messenger app, Instagram, and Workplace, its office collaboration service. Issues reported with Facebook Messenger include being unable to connect to the servers and new messages not coming in. On Instagram, DMs or Direct Messages are also not working for some in addition to stories not loading.
There is a sudden spike in the number of complaints shown by Downdetector.com at around 3 PM Indian Standard Time (IST). The wave began in Europe and Japan but later users in India were also affected. A company spokesperson said:
“We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible.”
Downdetector.com, an outage tracking website, showed that there were more than 1,800 incidents of people reporting issues with Messenger and about 350 on Instagram.
