Why Is Google Mail Down?

When I opened Google Chrome yesterday, I noticed my profile image on the top right corner is disabled and not loaded. When I checked Gmail, I cannot log in and I receive an error. The same when I checked my Google Drive. When I tried to re-log in the browser to my account, it said it cannot find my account as if I don’t have a Google account.

I got nervous and thought they disabled my account again for violation. But then when I went to Twitter, I saw lots of tweets that Google is down at the moment. I felt relieved after seeing that. What caused the problem?

Why Is Google Mail Down?

When this problem happened in December 14, 2020, Google products like Gmail, YouTube, Maps, and other services were down globally not just in one area. The day the problem happened, YouTube gave a statement on this matter:

“We are aware that many of you are having issues accessing YouTube right now – our team is aware and looking into it. We’ll update you here as soon as we have more news: Team YouTube.”

Google’s major services like YouTube and Gmail were down for millions of users around the world and several people started complaining about it on social media around 5 PM IST. Google blamed an “internal storage quota issue” for the outage that its workplace status dashboard showed started around 6:55 AM Eastern time for all its listed services:

  • Gmail
  • Google Calendar
  • Google Drive
  • Google Docs
  • Google Sheets
  • Google Slides
  • Google Sites
  • Google Groups
  • Google Hangouts
  • Google Chat
  • Google Meet
  • Google Vault
  • Currents
  • Google Forms
  • Google Cloud Search
  • Google Keep
  • Google Tasks
  • Google Voice
  • Admin Console
  • Google Analytics
  • App Maker
  • Google Maps
  • Blogger
  • Google Sync for Mobile and Classroom

While the problem is happening, the Google search functions were left unaffected. About 45 minutes later, the dashboard issued a status message indicating all services were back online for the majority of affected users. Because of what happened, Google apologized for the disruption in an emailed statement and said it would “conduct a thorough follow up review to ensure this problem cannot recur in the future.”
