I’m trying to copy a folder of some official documents to some other location but receiving this 0x800700de error code. First, I thought that it is happening because of insufficient space, but then I checked and found that there is a lot of space. Then I tried to change the name of the folder and again tried to copy it, and it worked. The previous title contains some special characters like ‘&’ in it. The problem is I’m not allowed to change the name of the folder, so I have to save it as it is. Is there any method for fix this problem?

The first thing you can try is to disable the antivirus installed on your PC because sometimes firewall/antivirus can prevent the file transfer. Use these steps to disable it-

  • In the search bar type- ‘Control Panel.’
  • Open it.
  • Click on ‘System and Security.’
  • Select ‘Window’s Firewall.’
  • Disable the firewall by turning it off.
  • Go to the ‘Customise Settings.’
  • Click on ‘Turn off Windows Firewall.’
  • Click on ‘OK.’

Now again try to copy the folders and after coping it turn on the firewall.

  • In the search bar type- ‘Control Panel.’
  • Open it.
  • Click on ‘System and Security.’
  • Select ‘Window’s Firewall.’
  • Enable the firewall by turning it on.
  • Go to the ‘Customise Settings.’
  • Click on ‘Turn off Windows Firewall.’
  • Click on ‘OK.’

Error code “0x800700DE” seems to be related to file naming. If the name of your files include a special character like an ampersand (&) or the “and” symbol, it is likely that you will receive this error. On a post in social.technet.microsoft.com, one user is trying to copy several files and one or more files contain special characters in the name.

He keeps getting this error and failing the copy process. If he copies the files but the file with special character excluded, the copying completes successfully. When he renamed the file and removed the ampersand symbol, the files all copied successfully. So, if you keep getting this error and you are copying multiple files, check each file for special characters.

Remove special characters from the file names like ampersand (&), dash (-), and others.
