Hi Madoona,

I totally agree on what you have mentioned. Security really is the biggest factor not just on the Internet but in general.

Let us talk about the usage of credit card on the Internet, benefits and its risk. When entering information like credit card, bank account information and other online transactions that in need of personal information, there will always a risk of getting infiltrated and or misused by someone else technical enough to steal.

My suggestions of these are listed below:

  1. Do not enter information if the website is not legitimate. Do some research about that website and it may only be acting as a legitimate but it's not.
  2. Check the URL of the website. Mostly secured website uses https:// in their URL. This gives you a sense of relief that it is secure.
  3. Do not give out personal information through email, to someone asking you to provide you these information.
  4. If by any chance you are being fooled and you happen to give out your personal information, contact your bank customer service and or your credit card provider to inform them. They will give you instructions on what to do to prevent them by using your credentials.
  5. And mostly, do some research and be aware of the website you are locking on the net.

Good luck.

Hi Madoona,

That’s a very nice question and I'm glad you asked.

Internet security is a very important aspect to consider since the internet is a home of defrauder, viruses, Malware and destructive issues apart from its benefits.

The first thing you need to consider or ensure is that whatever website you are visiting, either for business or freelance work, is legitimate. How can you prove this? On the bottom right pane of the website is usually an indication showing whether the site is verified or insecure, mostly when using Firefox or Opera browsers. The indicator can show that website is verified. The website is original if it has VeriSign.

You also need to check the security certificate. If the certificate is already expired, then the website might be a fake.
You also need to ensure the website starts with https (s standing for secure).

Also on receiving e-mail that tells you of winning in a competition and asks for your account information, you should never trust those people or simply anyone you don’t know. You may also receive emails telling you to update your account in a website or give your personal information to access a refund. You should never trust these sites. It’s also known as phishing.

I hope this information helps.
