Hello!

While I am  at home doing  interior designing work, I noticed my computer is slowing down and sometimes I experience hang-ups. I suspected that my computer is attacked by a virus, so I used Microsoft Defender to scan my computer for some virus.

When I am in the middle of scanning my computer  an error message appeared that tells me that service has stopped.

This program's service has stopped. You can start the service has stopped. You can start the service manually or restart your computer, which will start the service. (Error Code: 0x800106ba)

Upon analyzing the error, I tried to remove defender, and installed it again. I also re-started the computer, and when Windows Vista started, I again scanned my computer for virus, but defender again displayed the same error. Please share some thoughts on my issue.

This error usually occurs if you have installed MSE or Microsoft Security Essentials. This is a type of software that works like a Windows Defender. It provides protection to your computer from any viruses, malwares and other malicious software. This software is conflicting with Windows Defender. To be able for the Windows Defender to work again try to uninstall the MSE and if you are having a hard time uninstalling this software this link will help you out..

MSE is also a certified software from Microsoft so its your choice whether to uninstall it or uninstall your Windows Defender if your an XP user and disable it for VISTA/W7.

I hope this little pointers help you .

This error message appears normally when you install conflicting software more likely to Windows Defender like MSE. If there is, try uninstalling that program or uninstall defender. It is just like installing your computer with two Antivirus programs at once. I can prove since I tried it myself.

Those programs are trying to detect each other as harmful programs thus killing each other. Worse case scenario is when one program tries to save your files from infection and the other program executes to terminate the other one and that would result to crash your system. If you do not want to uninstall it, you can go to msconfig and disable that service.

Step 1: Click your start button and then select run.
Step 2: Just type msconfig and hit enter or press Ok.
Step3: On the system configuration utility select the services tab.
Step4: On the services, find the program you want to disable by removing or uncheck its check box and click apply then ok.
Step5: Close the system configuration utility by pressing close and you will be ask to restart the computer  in order your
             settings to take effect.

If the Microsoft Windows Defender service has suddenly stopped, check if you have other antivirus program installed on your computer. If a third-party antivirus program is installed, Microsoft Windows Defender will automatically disable itself to allow the third-party antivirus to run. To start the Microsoft Windows Defender service and to enable Microsoft Windows Defender, uninstall any third-party antivirus you may have.

Download the free version of Revo Uninstaller and install it. Once installed, start Revo Uninstaller then select your third-party antivirus and click “Uninstall”. Follow the normal uninstall process. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click to restart later. When uninstall is complete, click “Scan” to scan your computer for any leftover files and delete everything it finds.

This removes everything the program created on your computer. When it is finished, close Revo Uninstaller and restart the computer. Microsoft Windows Defender should be enabled after booting. You may now scan your computer. You can also download and use Sophos Virus Removal Tool to perform a complete scan of your computer.

You don’t need to disable Microsoft Windows Defender because Sophos Virus Removal Tool works alongside any antivirus program you may have.
