Which computer would be faster:

Dell Optipex 745
Pentium (R) D CPU 3.40 GHZ 339 GHZ 2.99 GB RAM

OR

Dell Optiplex 330

Intel (R) Core (TM) 2 duo CPU E 7200 @ 2.53 GHZ 1.59 GHZ 1.98 GB RAM

We already have both of these computers the 745 was touted as a server. We are setting up a network of 4 computers and I was wondering which of these would work best as a server.

Thank  you,

Hello Moslimjim,

I have read thoroughly the problem of your. I may suggest a solution for this. The Pentium (D) processor you are using is a Pentium 4 type processor with entry level technology of dual core. This acts like Pentium 4 processor actually. Obviously the dual core processor will give you the best speed. But the problem here is your RAM. You have less RAM associated with the Dell Optiplex 330 machine which reduces its ability. But moreover this machine will give you best speed between the two I think. But I think it would be better to add a RAM to the machine and then using it as server PC.

Hope this will help.

Thanks.

Hi there,

Usually servers need more speed and also storage power to process data and also it requires a minimum space in RAM for determining the process. So I think the Dell Optipex 745 is a better option to use as a server. But if possible to increase few RAM in Dell Optiplex 330 than it would be a better choice, because it already have dual core processors. So it can sweep data better than a single core.

Thank you,
