Unlike Microsoft Office that is distributed commercially, the Apache OpenOffice is a free program and its direct rival on productivity suite. Apache OpenOffice is compatible with most Microsoft Office documents including many other file types. Similar to Microsoft Office, Apache OpenOffice is a set of powerful tools but not all modules have to be installed.

You can customize it to install only those features you want to use. The latest version, Apache OpenOffice 4.0.0, already supports Microsoft Windows 8. When you install Apache OpenOffice, you can select from different available modules like Writer, Base, Calc, Impress, Draw, and Math including shared Optional Components. Apache OpenOffice’s Writer is the equivalent of Microsoft Office Word while Calc is the equivalent of Microsoft Office Excel where you can open your spreadsheets.

Draw is the graphics editor of Apache OpenOffice. With Base, you can access and create databases using the Database Wizard. Math is one of the many advantages of Apache OpenOffice over Microsoft Office. It is a standalone equation editor which is capable of inserting formulas into Writer as objects. To download the latest version, visit Download Apache OpenOffice 4.0.0.

This version supports Windows 2003, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and the latest Windows 8 as well as Mac OS X and Linux. Watch “Open Office 3.3 Download and Install | video tutorial by TechyV” to learn more.
