Notepad stops working while Pro Tools is playing

Hi experts,

When, I open Notepad and type in it while Pro Tools is playing. It appears that Pro Tools thinks Notepad is a part of its own programming and tries to get Notepad to access DAE.dll. Guess there is some quirky "focus" "calling" going on in Pro Tools. Notepad kind of seizes up, but works okay after a few re-focuses. How to fix it?

Thanks in advance.

Error Message: This application has failed to start because DAE.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem

Hi there Lynda M Harvey,

This is a well known bug that appeared a long time ago and is fixed in the newer version of the Pro Tools. To remove the problem, please update your software.

However, there is a quite simple workaround for this – the problem occurs because Notepad from some reason tries to do the playback of the file and to do that needs access to the DAE.dll which is at that moment used by the Pro Tools. You should open your Pro Tools settings and set the playback device in Sounds and Audio Devices to anything but Digidesign hardware.

Best regards,

If that happens whenever you open Microsoft Notepad while Pro Tools is running, check Notepad’s shortcut and make sure the link to the EXE file is not directed to open a file automatically. Click “Start”, “All Programs”, “Accessories” then right-click “Notepad” and select “Properties”. In “Notepad Properties” window, go to “Shortcut” tab then check the path in “Target”. The path should display only:

  • %SystemRoot%\system32\notepad.exe

Any text that will appear after “notepad.exe” should be deleted because that causes Notepad to open the file automatically. Normally, when you open Microsoft Notepad, it will open with a blank document by default. But if you insert something like this at the end of the path:

  • %SystemRoot%\system32\notepad.exe “D:\install\YouTube\readme.txt”

Microsoft Notepad will open the “readme.txt” file located in “D:\install\YouTube” automatically instead of having a blank document. If unnecessary strings were added after “notepad.exe”, delete it then click “OK”. That should fix the problem.
