The ROM virus is believed to be a new and improved version of the malware Backoff which had hit major retail giants last year and is said to have affected over 1000 US businesses. How does ROM infect its victims? How is it different from the earlier Backoff Virus versions that have been detected?

Hi, Avery!

Yes, the ROM virus is the new version of the same Backoff malware, as you described. The difference in this kind is that changes were made to make analysis and detection much more difficult, like for instance, it creates many autorun registries, so it is quite persistent and you can't get rid off it easily. While at the same time it works similarly to the previous versions, stealing credit card data.
