In order to fix this issue, you have to run a hotfix for Windows XP built by Microsoft. Download Hotfix.

Also, check that your internet connection is working fine as it isn’t blocking Microsoft Security Essentials to connect with its update server.

Also, uninstall the existing installation of MSE and download the latest one. Download Microsoft Security Essentials.

Also, you can fix the problem by following the manual reset of Windows Update components.

It seems you are using Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows XP. If this is the case, check the version you are using. Microsoft Security Essentials works on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 but not on Windows 8 and higher prior to version 4.5.

This means if you are using Windows XP, you need to be using the version of Microsoft Security Essentials before version 4.5 because Microsoft Security Essentials 4.5 and higher doesn’t run or doesn’t support Windows XP. If you want to use Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows XP, download Microsoft Security Essentials 4.4.304. This is the last version, I think, that works on Microsoft Windows XP.

Since Microsoft no longer supports Windows XP, I’m not sure if Microsoft Security Essentials will still continue receiving virus definition updates. On the other hand, if Microsoft Security Essentials stops receiving updates because you are using an unsupported operating system, you can try downloading the latest standalone virus definition updates.

Go to Microsoft Security Essentials Latest Definition Update and download the update specific to your operating system: 32-bit or 64-bit.
