Is it safe to delete thumbs.dp file?

Asked By 0 points N/A Posted on -

I am seeing a series of thumbs.dp file on my Windows XP especially if I am on the thumbnail view.

Some of it, although it takes up small disk space,

I still want to delete a series of it which will sum to maybe 500kb or more. I only have 60GB on my hard disk, and I will need to free some space. Is it safe to delete it?

If so, how can I totally delete all of it? Please help.

Yes, you can delete it and it will not harm your computer or will cause a major issue. It is an automatically generated thumbnail cache. They are hidden files so in order to view them, you need to follow the steps below:

  • Go to My Computer or just simply open any folder and click Tools then folder Options.
  • Under the View Tab from the folder Options window.
  • Under the Advanced Settings below the folder Views, check the box beside the Do not cache thumbnails then click OK below.

After that, you have two option to delete;

  • Under the Hidden Files and Folders, tick the Show hidden files and folders.
  • Check the Hide extensions for known file types and the Hide protected operating system to see everything.
  • You can now see the thumbs.db on different locations. Just right-click on it then select Delete.

  • Click on start then Search
  • Select All Files and Folders on the left pane.
  • Type thumbs.dp on the search box.
  • Make sure you have chosen Local Hard Drives in Look in box.
  • Click Search
  • A list of thumbs.dp will appear. If you want to delete it all, click on View tab then Select All, right-click then delete.
  • Close the Search window.

Thumbs.dp are cache of the thumbnails which helps in speeding up the loading of the pictures during viewing. So, there is no harm if you would delete this said file. To delete thumbs.dp already present in your HD and disable this file from showing up again, follow these steps:

1. Click on "Start". Go to "Search" and click on "All Files and Folders". In the search box of "All or part of the file name"  type "thumbs.dp". Select "Local Hard Drives (C:)" for "Look in" option and click on "Search". When search has been completed, click on "Edit" from the window menu. Click on "Select All" and press "Del" from your keyboard and click on "Yes".

2. Go to "My Computer". Click on "Tools" from the menu. Go to "View" tab. Tick "Do not cache thumbnails" and click on "OK".
