Hi Gemma,

Most reason of computer stack up/freeze is the memory RAM. It can properly work if there's having a lot of applications and programs installed in the computer. If the memory RAM is 256 Mb, better to upgrade it into 512 Mb or 1 GB as much as better. I have here solutions to fix your problem. Try any of the following solutions.

Solution 1:

Have she try to run the computer in Safe Mode? If not, she's going to run the computer into Safe Mode and restore the computer into the day that her computer runs very well by using System Restore. System Restore helps you to go back the day when your computer runs properly, but unfortunately it will delete the newest files you have saved.

Follow these steps:

Step 1: Run the computer into Safe mode, just keep pressing F8 during the loading startup.
Step 2: Under the Windows Advanced Option select Safe Mode and hit Enter. On startup, the Desktop dialog box will appears.
Step 3: You are going to select NO button, to proceed in System Restore.
Step 4: Select "Restore my computer to an earlier time" radio button and click Next.
Step 5: In the calendar choose the day before when computer is working in a good condition then click Next. The computer will automatically restart.

Solution 2:

If there's a new downloaded before it's start computer stack up. This can be the cause of that problem, better to delete that program. It only occupying some of your memory. Computer can't work properly when there's a lot of applications and programs that installed.

Follow these steps:

Step 1: Run your computer into Safe Mode. Follow the steps 1-2 at Solution 1. On startup, the Desktop dialog box will appears.
Step 2: Select Yes.
Step 3: Press Windows key and select Control Panel.
Step 4: Pick Add or Remove Programs category. The Add or Remover Programs dialog box will open.
Step 5: Under the Change or Remove Programs, scroll it down and you are going to click change/remove button of the latest program that needs to remove. It will automatically remove to your computer then restart your computer.

Solution 3:

As my experience for this problem, I notice that the problem is having a lot of cookies ad Internet Browser. Sometimes I haven't get a chance to clean my Internet Browser. When I'm done with the computer, I just turn it off. But one day when I open it, it's freeze in the desktop. My desktop icons doesn't shows up. The first thing I did is to delete the Internet History and cookies.

Follow these steps:

Step 1: By running your computer into Safe Mode. Follow the steps 1-3 at Solution 2.
Step 2: Pick Network and Internet connection category.
Step 3: Pick Internet Options icon. When then Internet Options dialog box appears, look for browsing history.
Step 4: Check the "Delete browsing history on exit" check box then click the Delete button.
Step 5: Under the Delete Browsing History dialog Box CHECK all the check box to delete. Or uncheck Form data and Passwords if you doesn't want to delete information and passwords you type into forms.
Step 6: Click Delete button then after click Apply and OK. And you can now restart your computer.

Solution 4:

Perform Disk cleanup & Disk defragmenter to your computer. This both are recommended to do regularly, it helps you clean and compress files. Disk cleanup helps you to free up disk space on your hard drive. While Disk Defragmenter helps you to increase the speed by rearranging files that stored on your hard disk.

Follow these steps for Disk Cleanup:

Step 1: By running your computer into Safe Mode. Follow the Steps 1-3 at Solution 2.
Step 2: Press Windows key and select Run.
Step 3: Type cleanmgr.exe then Disk Cleanup dialog box will open.
Step 4: Check all the check box on the Files to delete.
Step 5: Click OK then click Yes. Wait for a seconds, the disk cleanup is cleaning up necessary files. Then after you perform the Disk Cleanup, Let's proceed now in Disk Defragmenter.

Follow these steps:

Step 1: Press the Windows key, select All Programs –> Accessories –> System Tools –> Disk Defrgmenter. Then the Disk Defragmenter window will open.
Step 2: Right-click the local drive C and select Defragment and wait for a minute and when defragment is done.
Step 3: After performing Disk cleanup and Disk Defragmenter, restart now the computer.

There are many reasons why your computer will freeze during startup. It could be a problem with your hard disk or RAM, it could be a problem with your software or programs installed. And then restart your computer with the bootable disk inside it to boot it from the CD and run the memtest. And also, you need to check for available disk space that you have. There might be an issue with your hard disk space that is causing the error to happened. Delete or remove unwanted programs. Check your recently added programs for compatibility issue and remove any recently added programs if its causing the issue.
