First is click on the start and then go to control panel and then find and click Programs and features (you must choose large or small icons for an easier search) and then after click a new window will open and then on the left side of the windows that open you will see "Turn windows features on or off"click that and a new window will open drag down and you will see Telnet server and Telnet client click on the box to put a check on them and then click ok.

Hello Kathlyn,

The fact that you received that message after typing the command ' Telnet ' is due to the fact that Telnet is not enabled on your machine. So, to solve this problem, you have to enable it. To do so, just follow the directions below:

1. Launch the Windows 7 control panel: You can do it by clicking the Windows Start Menu icon and selecting Control Panel from the navigation menu. You will obtain the image below.

Windows 7 control Panel

2. Click on Programs and Features: Which is one of the Control Panel items. You will have the image below as a result.

3. Click on "Turn Windows features on or off": You will find this link in the left navigation bar of "Programs and Features" window, and in result, you will have something like the image below.

Programs and features

4. Check the "Telnet Client" feature.

Once you have checked the "Telnet Client" feature, click on OK button and wait (you will have a message from Windows 7 telling you to wait while the install is complete).

Telnet Client

5. Test your telnet command: You just have to reopen the Command Prompt Window, and type your telnet command. Here's an example of the result in the image below:

That's all! After these steps, your Telnet service will be enabled.
