How do Facebook Groups work?

I use Facebook but I'm unsure how groups work. Recently I've been invited to a number of groups but I'm not sure why or what the purpose is of these. Can anyone explain these to me? And, can anyone help me understand what exactly I would use these for? Thank you.

With Face Book groups, you can simply build up a private connection with the group of people you are interested in. Then within this social media group space, you can easily share messages, updates, photos, etc. by selecting from three privacy protection levels. 
Further, there is a possibility to set this privacy option, specifically for individual groups that are created.
