The hard drive on my computer failed and Dell sent me a replacement. I need to send the defective one back to them. Now, I have a lot of personal files on the old hard drive and I want to make sure it's completely wiped out when they receive it. How do I do this?

What you must do here is format the drives entirely.

You can do that by:

1. Opening My Computer

2. Right clicking on the respective drive.

3. Select the format option.

4. Then click on START. Select OK  in the next box that pops up.

That should be it and all your files would be gone.
