How to check if Hard disks are new

I recently purchased a 500 GB hard disk and I have found that it has some issues with it. I purchased it from a retailer that assured to me that it was a new one. But having used it for a few days, I am beginning to think that it is a second hand one. How do I identify if the hard disk I am buying is new?

Most of the time you will get the manufacturing date of the hard on the below of the hard disk. From the manufacturing date you can determine if the hard disk is new or old. Below is one example.

Alternatively, you can install smartmontools on your system. This is a program which is used to control and monitor storage devices. Run the below command in smartmontools.

smartctl –all |grep -i power_on_hours

This will give you the total number of hours it is used till that time.
