Good Day Rose,

This is your original post; I am using a broadband connection for few days. I am using MS Windows. While I try to connect to my local network an error message is being displayed on the screen saying- "Duplicate name exists." What does this error message signify, and how can I resolve it?

Duplicate error message often cause of this pop-up if the name already exist. A change of name of your computer should fix this. To change the name of the computer,  just follow these steps below:

  1. Start, Settings Control Panel System Right Click System
  2. Click properties
  3. Click the computer Name Tab Look for Computer Description and you'll notice that it is different from your computer's name. A change of this name is the fix, click "Change" button, think of a name different from the other's.
  4. click OK and restart your computer. Another fix for this is to clear the DNS. Type this steps in your command prompt. ipconfig/Flushdns and this should take care of this issue. The cause of this is if you have a group created. Other group has a name the same as yours. Doing those commands above is the solution of this issue.

  • This caused by a duplicate name of NetBios conflict with other computer name in your networking. A name the same as yours are on the same network and this common problem is the reason.
  • Mostly, this happens when you are connecting your personal computer to a workgroup, office that uses networking.
  • A quick change of your name will resolve this issue, but you will be need to perform all the changes or whoever added the conflicted computer to the network connection last.

The steps to change the name is not difficult to perform, follow the instructions below

  1. On My Computer, do right click and click Properties
  2. Go to Computer Name tab and change the name, additional character to the existing name will make the difference.
  3. You may click on the change button to do that steps
  4. Click on OK button and restart your computer
