This is a very common error.

One of the causes of this error is a large amount of users attempting to carry out an update at the same time. This leads to a high amount of traffic trying to access apple servers.

Additionally, you may be blocking Apple's servers from communicating with your host's file. To rectify this do the following:

  • Open the terminal and type sudo nano/etc/hosts
  • Delete this line in the host file
  • 74.208.10.249 gs.apple .com
  • Try the restoration process again by starting iTunes and clicking on the restore and update buttons.

The restoration should take place successfully after this.
